Chief JAMBASE EDITOR Dennis Cook Reviews the New Cd Lansdale St.-featuring Judge & Lauren Murphy
-
March 5, 2009
This sweeps you up with a readiness and confidence that takes your feet out from underneath you. Opener "Family Asylum" could be the greatest Johnny Cash/June Carter gem you've never heard, packed with crazy relatives, cool turns of phrase, death bed worry and a vibe the boys at Folsom Prison would've loved. From there, the wind whips us westward into the "Blue," with ringing guitars and manly energies suggesting both surf rock and the Los Angeles rough boy rock of The Blasters. And so it goes for the remaining five cuts, shifting wildly yet grounded in something solid. When most people reference "roots music" or "Americana" it's often a cheap way of saying rock 'n' roll with a touch of twang. However, ...... read more

The Judge quote in Paul Liberatore's article of the Marin IJ
-
December 5, 2008
Paul Liberatore: 'Battle of the Bands' showcases local musicians.
It's a Wednesday night, normally a slow one on the Marin club scene, but Sweetwater Station is buzzing with lights, cameras, action and a whole lot of local musicians raring to plug in and play.
It looks like the set of a music video, and that's pretty much what it is, except this is a video shoot on a rather large scale, a marathon that will go late into the evening.
Nine local bands are in line to have a Comcast video crew record them performing live on the Larkspur club's stage for a Bay Area cable TV show called "Battle of the Bands."..........."You can't get anywhere unless you get your music out there for the right reasons," says Judge Murphy, a singer with his wife, Lauren, in the Marin country rock band Landsdale Station. "A lot of musicians think you go for the major record deal and then you're a rock star with other people schlepping for you. But it doesn't work that way. The music industry has changed. You don't go for the big record deal anymore. You do things like this. We get to be on TV and play our tunes. It helps perpetuate what we do."

Update 3.15.08:
Dear Friends,
The Fierro family wishes to thank everyone who has made great effort to come to his aid during this difficult time . Your outreach and offers of support are incredibly empowering and wonderful.
We understand that so many of you feel a special bond with Martin -- through his soulful music, his humor, his spirit, and boundary-free passion to make a positive connection with everyone he encounters. Over his past 50+ years of performing, the Meester has touched so many so deeply with his unconditional desire to deliver the magic of live music and make people happy. We are deeply appreciative of the many friends who have "been there" for Martin, in so many amazing ways. Martin loves and appreciates you more than you know. He truly treasured all of the special, bizarre and unexpected moments he has shared with us all. Onstage and off.
All official announcements will be posted here regarding any public memorials and musical celebrations of his life. Please feel free to visit the blog to post your messages and share your memories of Martin with the community that orbits in Zero gravity around our Meester.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

XXXXX
I appeared on KGO-AM’s (810) Ronn Owens on Friday Dec. 21, playing two hours of Bay Area music for a show entitled “The Best Music You’ve Never Heard.”
For five years I did the show with Pete Wilson, who died last July, and Ronn wanted to revive it in his honor. It worked. Something was shining down on us. Must have been the oversized image of Wilson’s head they put on his old studio chair.
For two hours we got no turkeys, just really great unsigned bands, including Sherry Austin, Mighty Mike Schermer, Colby Pollard, Lauren and Judge Murphy, the Attila and Dave Project and the Wicked Sons.
You can get the list and links to their sites at
www.kgo.com. You’ll be surprised at how much great talent there is in the area, and how many great musicians can’t get signed to major labels anymore.
We’ll do the show again in 2008.

Lauren Murphy, lead singer of Lansdale Station,
http://www.LansdaleStation.com , one of the bands performing at the festival, says she feels honored to be part of an event that is working to support these undervalued societal roles. I have learned it still is very difficult to be a woman in the entertainment business. When I heard of the event, I thought that it's really cool that someone wants to honor not only women in music, but mothers. It's so hard to juggle career and family," Murphy says.
